On 23 May 2013, judges met for the Starpack industry judging day. This year, the Starpack Awards welcomed three new judges to the panel, Simon Pendry, Creative Director at Blue Marlin, Alvan Beaton, Business Development Director at the Benson Group and Clover Abbott, Packaging Technologist at Innocent.
The judges deliberated for hours, with debates arising around the technique used for the light-up Bombay Sapphire Electro box, entered by Webb deVlam, which won the Excellence Award in the graphic design and decoration category and was shortlisted for the Superstar Award. After some assurance testing, Asda claimed the Excellence Award in the transit category and also gained a place on the list of three nominees for the Superstar Award for its extraordinarily sleek protective packaging. Finally on the list of nominees for the Superstar top-prize in the Starpack Awards, was the entry by Tin Horse for the Kleenex® Slim Pack, which also won the Excellence Award in the green star and sustainability award.
Dr Mark Caul, Technical Manager at Tesco said, “It has been an honour and pleasure to be invited to judge Starpack 2013. To be able to give something back to the packaging industry is always an opportunity not to be missed, especially for such a creative and passionate industry. The standard of entries was extremely high and this made the judging process pleasurably difficult. I was inspired and impressed by the innovation and, in particular, the thought that had gone into sustainable credentials and customer convenience, even for those packs not entered into those particular categories. Once again, the entrants and the packaging industry can hold their heads up high”.
The Superstar Award will be announced at the awards ceremony in London on 11 July 2013.
