The Wipak Group received double recognition in the 2018 WorldStar Packaging Awards. The family-owned business, which has a UK plant in Welshpool, Powys, was a two-time winner in the food category for a pack duo including a climate-neutral stand-up pouch for German meat snack manufacturer, MarKo, and an easy-open vacuum pack for Finnish food company, Atria. Having previously used metallised plastic packaging, MarKo, wanted a more eco-friendly pack for its Salami Sticks product. The Wipak team developed a paper-plastic composite pack, which utilised FSC®-certified paper, reduced global warming potential by 40%, and required approximately 33% less energy to manufacture. The Atria easy-open vacuum pack for minced beef uses Wipak’s sandwich-printed BIAXER, together with a matt black SC XX bottom film. Consumers simply pull the tab to peel open the package and the minced beef can be transferred straight into a pan or a bowl for preparation. The pack uses over 50% less packaging material than traditional minced meat packages, and adapts perfectly to the product shape, which saves space during transport, in-store, in shopping baskets, in the refrigerator and in the bin. The beef is packed without the use of packaging gases.
