WorldStar 2015 recognises continuing growth of excellence in packaging art, with the best of the best receiving global applaud …
Winners of the WorldStar Awards, which give members of the packaging industry the chance to win global recognition, were to receive their 2015 awards in May 2015 and entries are already being invited for the 2016 awards.
The pre-eminent international award in packaging, WorldStar illustrates the continual advancement of packaging art and provides international standards in packaging excellence. President of the World Packaging Organisation, Thomas L Schneider, says the annual WorldStar Awards for packaging design excellence are continuing to grow in importance and prestige all over the world and paid to tribute to those who had the difficult task of judging the entries. “Every year the WPO Board of Directors takes the time to review and recorgnise the best of the best in packaging design,” he said. “Some of the designs are aesthetically pleasing, beautiful in many cases in terms of market appeal. Some are highly functional and effective in terms of product protection, and some help us strive towards an ever more sustainable society, using innovative materials and clver application of more familiar materials.”
He said it was easy to reflect on the time and effort designers put into their profession, once the judging had finished and that even those who weren’t successful in winning an award should still be proud of what they had accomplished because they had all won a national or regional award in order to be sanctioned to enter the Worldstar Awards in the first place.
With the 2015 WorldStar Awards due to take place in Milan, Italy, on May 19th at the time of Packaging Gazette going to press, the next WorldStar Awards were already open for entry with judging due to take place during the second week in October 2015 in Mumbai, India.
The entry closing date for the 2016 awards is September 18th, 2015.
Superior in quality
WorldStars are presented only to those packages which, having already won recognition in a national competition, are compared by an expert panel of judges to similar packages from around the world. Awards are based on the judges’ consensus that a package is superior in its own right, and better in its class in execution or innovation by comparison. The WorldStar Competition is one of the major events of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and is the pre-eminent international award in packaging.
The WorldStar awards are administered by IOM Communications Ltd on behalf of The Packaging Society, a division of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining When entering WorldStar, pack images and justifications are compared by an expert panel of judges with other similar packs submitted from all around the world. Award decisions are based on the judges’ consensus that a pack is superior to the other packs in its geographical market and category, when it comes to performance and innovative design.
The judges consider the following criteria: Protection and preservation of contents; Ease of handling, filling, closing, opening and reclosing; Sales Appeal; Graphic Design; Quality of Production; Cost Reduction, economy of material; Environment compatability – recyclability; Ingenuity of construction; Suitability for local conditions (production, materials, market, etc.)
Full details of the winners and their entries will be featured in the next edition of the Packaging Gazette, which, as media partner, has produced the official Worldstar Awards Guide. n For further information visit www.worldstar.org or www.worldpackaging.org
