Manchester-based polythene manufacturer Duo UK has bagged a new contract for environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, which is also based in the North West. Duo will manufacture the distinctive green sacks used for the charity’s ’Big Tidy Up’ campaign ensuring they are made from 100 per cent recycled polythene which is all collected, reprocessed and manufactured in the UK.
The Big Tidy Up is England’s biggest ever litter pick and Keep Britain Tidy wants everyone, from community groups to companies and schools to get on the streets, cleaning up their neighbourhood. Since 2008, The Big Tidy Up has mobilised more than half a million people to collect almost 120,000 bags of rubbish.
Family-owned Duo, which turns over £25m, won the contract after initially approaching the fellow Greater Manchester organisation to offer its services.
Keep Britain Tidy’s sacks are manufactured using closed loop recycling which involves collecting used material from customers and combining it with waste polythene produced during the manufacturing process.
Duo’s managing director, David Brimelow, explained: “Once we’ve collected the waste material we recycle it into pellets which are then used to manufacture new packaging products. The real beauty is there is virtually no limit to the number of times this process can be repeated, meaning closed loop recycling is a sustainable and environmentally-friendly solution. For many of our clients, including Keep Britain Tidy being environmentally friendly is an essential part of their ethos, so this solution really appeals to them.”
