Devizes packaging company DS Smith has donated 800 boxes to help flood victims on the Somerset Levels.
DS Smith provided the boxes to the Somerset we are here to help donation group, an appeal set up by two Wiltshire women to help those who lost everything when water inundated their homes.
Friends Laura Self, 25, and Rebecca Wilkins, 24, set up a Facebook page and are overseeing a collection of clothing and household goods which will be donated to Somerset’s flood victims.
The pair have been receiving items including bedding, clothing, plates and non-perishable food from across the region and storing them at their homes in Trowbridge and Melksham.
When DS Smith employee Matt Hulland and his colleagues heard about the appeal they wanted to do what they could to help. Matt said, “We were so impressed with what Laura and Rebecca were doing and as a local business we felt we wanted to get involved.”
Matt spoke to DS Smith Managing Director Steve Hinton who was keen to assist and they organised a small team at Devizes to get in contact with the appeal to offer their support. Matt and his colleague Les Szymanski then delivered a lorry load of cardboard boxes to the homes of Laura and Rebecca – essential to pack up all the donations for delivery to the flood-hit areas.
Matt said, “The flooding may not be the top news story any more, but the consequences are still very real for those affected.
“Appeals like Laura and Rebecca’s are providing vital aid to people who have lost everything and have nowhere to go, and we are more than happy to do our bit.”
Laura and Rebecca say they have been overwhelmed by the support the appeal has received from the public. Laura said, “I still cannot believe what all of us have achieved. A big big thank you to Matthew and the team at DS Smith in Devizes who arranged delivery of 800 boxes totally free – such a huge help.”
