Demand for ‘food-derived’ impacts on labelling

Health stores and supermarkets are believed to be stimulating demand in the UK for a growing number of products which are isolated or purified from foods and marketed as alternative medicines.

These include herbs, dietary supplements, probiotics, amino acids, botanicals and vitamins.

Labelling plays an important role in highlighting potential health issues.

The global market is expected to double by 2017 and nutraceutical products are not subject to the same testing and regulations as pharmaceutical drugs so it is important for manufacturers to give as much information as possible on labels to avoid potential misuse.
