Cannon Packing and Logistics, a contract packaging company based in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, says it is saving 15 man-hours per week since it installed an AutoLoadBaler – equating to cost savings of £8,000 per year.
Director Greg Alder said: “The AutoLoadBaler has really helped streamline our operation here at Cannon Packing.” He added that, with the saving in labour costs and the depreciation draw down on the machine, it will have achieved payback in two years.
Cannon Packing and Logistics specialises in the re-packing of more than 1.75 million packs per month for various industries, including the automotive sector, and has grown progressively since the 1900s. Greg said that with over 250 tonnes per year of cardboard recycled and a further 250 tonnes shredded for infills, waste can become a real issue if it’s not dealt with at source.
After meeting Compact & Bale Ltd at an exhibition and seeing the Strautmann AutoLoadBaler on the stand, Managing Director Ian Doye wanted to re-evaluate the waste management process so that the staff could spend more time on core business and less time on waste handling.
Compact & Bale conducted a thorough waste audit at Cannon which identified that it was labour intensive with its existing Kenburn vertical baler. Compact & Bale’s solution to reduce waste handling costs was to install the AutoLoadBaler, which has a small footprint and lower cost than a horizontal semi-automatic baler. The waste team
can now continue without incurring overtime costs on baling.
Cannon bales more than 20 tonnes of cardboard per month, consisting mainly of small to medium size boxes generated from 1.75 million packs per month. The enormous amount of loose boxes were being double handled firstly by the packing team putting them into pallet boxes, then being collected by a member of the waste team on a pallet truck and then handled again to be placed into the existing baler – this process would take 10-15 minutes per pallet box.
The AutoLoadBaler and collection cart system located at source of waste eliminates the double handling and saves 15 man hours per week, or 32 days per year! 15 collection carts are now placed at the ends of the packing lines so the Cannon waste team simply wheel the cart to the AutoLoadBaler, replace the empty cart with the full one, push the button and walk away.
